Queensland Earth Observation Hub

The establishment of the Queensland Earth Observation Hub (the EO Hub), incorporating the SmartSat Cooperative Research Centre (SmartSat) Earth Observation Node, is a jointly funded initiative of SmartSat and the Queensland Government through the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning.

The establishment of the EO Hub aims to accelerate the growth of Queensland’s, and Australia’s, Earth observation industry by supporting commercialisation of research, and EO product and service development.  The EO Hub will generate opportunities for data analytics businesses and researchers, as well as downstream industries and upstream service providers of Earth observation imagery.

The EO Hub is supported by an Advisory Committee, whose membership includes: SmartSat, Queensland’s Department of State Development, Earth Observation Australia Inc., The University of Queensland, the Australian Space Agency, and Geoscience Australia.

The objectives of the EO Hub will be achieved through the activities outlined below.

Earth Observation Hub’s Partnering Program

The Earth Observation Hub’s Partnering Program is to support industry-led projects with a commercial or potential commercial application that:

  • demonstrate technology
  • create a new product or service or expand a current service offering

All projects must be industry led or solve an industry / business problem and involve at least one industry partner and one research partner.

Call for Applications Now Open for co-funding of demonstrator projects up to $300,000 in value.

  • Cash co-funding ratio 1:2 (industry : hub)
  • QLD industry-led, cash co-investment required

Research topics considered in this area include: Earth observation-related analytics, sensor technologies, and other technologies related to creating commercial products and services for application areas.

Earth Observation Hub’s Mobility Scheme

The Earth Observation Hub’s Mobility Scheme supports collaborative initiatives between Queensland universities and businesses to achieve defined outcomes, including project work relating to tackling specific industry challenges, facilitating knowledge transfer, and the opportunity to develop and upskill staff.:

Key features of the Mobility Scheme include:

  • Facilitates secondments/placements in both directions (business to university and vice versa)
  • Salary and on-costs are funded
  • Funding or seniority of secondee is not limited
  • Secondments will cover up to 1.0 FTE and up to 6 months duration
  • No default co-investment required, business pays for any additional activities outside of salary and on-costs (if required)
  • Regular application rounds to facilitate a quick response

Earth Observation Hub’s Calibration and Validation Program

The Earth Observation Hub’s Calibration and Validation Program aims at creating research to industry partnerships and empowering the space-related industry ecosystem of Queensland, creating State-based opportunities for industry-led Research & Development (R&D).   The Call is seeking industry-led projects relevant to calibration and/or validation of Earth observation data, projects, applications, and/or services.

Projects must be calibration and/or validation related and focused on either:

  1. translating research into business operations through R&D partnerships with an industry lead and a research partner; or
  2. improving business operations

Call for Applications Now Open for co-funding of demonstrator projects up to $150,000 in value.

  • Cash co-funding ratio 1:2 (industry : hub)
  • QLD industry-led, cash co-investment required

Earth Observation Hub’s Networking and Events Program

The EO Hub will be holding regular in-person networking, teaming, and capability discovery events – including:

  • Industry & Research teaming workshops
  • “Capability discovery” site visits
  • Evening networking meetups with invited speakers
