Hybrid Event

The Consulate of Italy in Adelaide, the Italian Cultural Institute in Melbourne, and the Association of Italian Researchers in Australasia (ARIA) proudly invite you to SmartSat CRC Distinguished Speaker event on occasion of the Italian Research Day 20222.

Alessio Del Bue, Head of PAVIS (Pattern Analyisis and computer Vision) Italian Institute of Technology (IIT)

This is a Hybrid event. A networking hour will be hosted following the presentation for in person attendees at the Australian Institute for Machine Learning Building, Lot Fourteen, Adelaide. Virtual attendees will be provided with a Microsoft Teams link with registration confirmation.

Physical and social human-robot-AI interaction for health and space applications at IIT

The Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) promotes excellence in basic and applied research to further boost the development of the Italian economy. Our research, focused on collaboration between different science fields, is based on the following research domains:

Computational Sciences, LifeTech, Nanomaterials, and Robotics. Such domains create an interdisciplinary research environment to readily face several challenges, developing technology for health, space and other applications. This talk will first present the development of human-robot interaction skills on the iCub humanoid robot and Artificial Intelligence powered smart environments. The iCub is a humanoid robot designed to support sophisticate interaction owing to its relatively dexterous hand, moving eyes and head, and overall appearance. Further, a whole-body electronic skin and force sensors allow measuring physical contacts. By relying on the expressive capabilities of the robot, we have also studied interaction from the cognitive neuroscience perspective. Moreover, we embed intelligence in our physical spaces in order to be reactive and to forecast our needs to create truly assistive AI system to support us in our workplaces and daily life. Finally, we present how the development of AI and robotics at IIT is applied in the space sector by developing autonomous non-wheeled all-terrain rovers and intelligent systems for observation and automated detection of subsoil from satellite imagery.

Bio

Alessio Del Bue is a tenured senior researcher leading the PAVIS (Pattern Analyisis and computer VISion) research line of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Genova, Italy. Previously, he was a researcher in the Institute for Systems and Robotics at the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon, Portugal. Before that, he obtained my Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. Lourdes Agapito in the Department of Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London. His current research interests are related to 3D scene understanding from multi-modal input (images, depth, audio) to support the development of assistive Artificial Intelligence systems. He is co-author of more than 100 scientific publications, in refereed journals and international conferences, member of the technical committees of important computer vision conferences (CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, BMVC, etc.), and he serves as an associate editor of Pattern Recognition and Computer Vision and Image Understanding journals. Finally, Dr. Del Bue is an IEEE and ELLIS member in the recently formed Genoa unit.

This is a hybrid event to be held on Thursday 3 June 2022.
