Professor Wei Xiang

Professor Wei Xiang is currently Cisco Chair of AI and Internet of Things at La Trobe University. He obtained his PhD in telecommunications engineering from the Institute for Telecommunications Research at the University of South Australia. Prior to joining in La Trobe, Professor Xiang was Foundation Chair and Head of the Discipline of Internet of Things (IoT) Engineering at James Cook University. His leadership was instrumental in establishing Australia’s first Engineers Australia accredited IoT Engineering course. He received the Tropical North Queensland (TNQ) Innovation Award in 2016, Pearcey Entrepreneurship Award in 2017, and Engineers Australia Cairns Engineer of the Year in 2017. He was inducted into Pearcey Foundation’s Hall of Fame in October 2018. He has been awarded several prestigious fellowship titles, including a Queensland International Fellowship, an Endeavour Research Fellowship, a Smart Futures Fellowship, and a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Invitational Fellowship.

Professor Xiang actively researches in the fields of the IoT, wireless communications, machine/deep learning for IoT data analytics, and computer vision. He was a co-recipient of four Best Paper Awards and has co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed papers including three research books and 180 journal articles. He has attracted over $8 million in cash funding for fundamental and applied research from external competitive sources. He has served in a large number of international conferences in the capacity of General Co-Chair, Technical Program Committee Co-Chair, and Symposium Chair. Professor Xiang is an elected Fellow of the UK-based Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Engineers Australia.
