The SmartSat CRC Annual Report 2024-25 presents a comprehensive overview of a year marked by significant technological progress, strengthened national capability, and deepened collaboration across Australia’s space ecosystem.
This year’s report outlines major advancements across SmartSat’s extensive research portfolio, including breakthroughs in Earth Observation, advanced satellite communications, onboard autonomy and AI, spectrum sensing from space, and cybersecurity for next-generation space systems.
Achievements from the past 12-months include the successful launch and commissioning of the South Australian Kanyini satellite, which delivered its first hyperspectral and thermal datasets to support environmental monitoring, agriculture, and climate resilience initiatives. The report also highlights the expanding impact of the Queensland Earth Observation Hub, which continued to drive targeted innovation across land management, coastal systems, climate adaptation, and ecosystem valuation.
SmartSat’s engagement with national and international partners continued to grow, with collaborations involving NASA, the European Space Agency, the New Zealand Space Agency, and leading industry organisations. The strong performance of SmartSat’s PhD cohort, reflected through global internships, awards, publications, and industry placements, underscores the CRC’s contribution to building Australia’s future space workforce.
The 2024-25 edition reflects SmartSat CRC’s ongoing role as a national leader in space innovation, technology maturation, and the development of sovereign capability for the benefit of industry, government, and the broader Australian community.
