This green paper is intended to stimulate discussions in the conceptualisation and planning of the AquaWatch Australia Mission in situ sensor network. The paper identifies the broad roles that the network will play in the mission and identifies a potential pathway for a cost-effective approach based on the Internet of Things. Some of the key issues and challenges to be addressed are also identified as are potential opportunities for technological innovation. We invite AquaWatch International and National Science Committee discussion, comment and contributions on the proposed in situ sensor network plan. After this process the concept will become a white paper for wider distribution.
